How is pace calculated?

Pace = finish time ÷ distance. A 4:00:00 marathon is 240 minutes ÷ 26.22 miles = 9.15 minutes, which is 9:09 per mile. Divide by 42.195 km instead to get 5:41 per km.

Finish time = pace × distance. 10:00 per mile for a half marathon (13.11 miles) gives 2:11:06.

Predicted time = T1 × (D2 ÷ D1)1.06. This is the Riegel formula, published by Peter Riegel in 1977. It is a good guide from 5K to the half marathon and tends to be optimistic for the marathon.

Distances used: 5K = 3.107 mi, 10K = 6.214 mi, half marathon = 13.109 mi (21.0975 km), marathon = 26.219 mi (42.195 km).

Quick answers

What pace do I need for a 4 hour marathon?

A 4:00:00 marathon is 9:09 per mile, or 5:41 per kilometer, held for all 26.2 miles.

What pace is a sub 2 hour half marathon?

To break 2:00:00 in a half marathon you need to average 9:09 per mile (5:41 per km) or faster.

What pace is a 30 minute 5K?

A 30:00 5K is 9:39 per mile, or 6:00 per kilometer.

How accurate is the race time predictor?

It uses the Riegel formula (T2 = T1 x (D2 / D1)^1.06), so treat it as an estimate. For example, a 30:00 5K predicts about 4:47:44 for a marathon, but longer races also depend on training volume, heat and hills.
